this is the restaurant right next to my hotel. its very fancy and vegetarian. the soup is awesome and the waiters wear shiny sequined tunics!
here is the white temple on top of the hill at beihai park. i really wanted to go but i thought it more prudent to go back to the hotel at this point. i'll just have to go back again! the guide from the forbidden city said its the most beautiful temple in town and that it was built by the emperor for his mother but also as a token of goodwill to the tibetans.
you could get rides on boats among the lotus at beihai park.
hill to north of forbidden city, diverts wind to lake at northwest so that it is cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
lover's tree. couples get their photos taken in front of it for good luck. this is in the palace garden which i didn't think was that awesome but i suppose i didn't look around much. i ended up sitting and listening to two young english boys talk about their favorite cars.
female lion (because it has baby under paw). this one is in front of where the concubines were kept and so the ears are lowered and the eyes are covered to warn the concubines not to listen or see anything they shouldn't. the male lion holds a ball. you are supposed to have your picture with only one so that you get good luck in either marriage or your career.
biggest marble carving. they moved it in winter so they could slide it over ice.
obviously that's where the emperor sat. in other rooms, they have cranes and elephants next to it to symbolize reliable-ness and long life, i think. i got a tour guide but i guess i wasn't paying attention too well. i was pretty tired by this point.
here's the entrance to the forbidden city as seen from the north end of tian'anmen square. i like the guards here. they all got their own umbrella so they were out of the sun.

here's a building commemorating mao or something as seen from quianmen. i didn't really want to go up but they have really good helpers here and the guy pretty much forced me up it. it was probably worth the 20yuan.
probably the most touristy place i've visited: quianmen lu. full of shops and tourist. i didn't know how to cross the street to tian'anmen square so i just followed this group of tourists to here. i didn't really look around much, just found a nice place to sit down and eat some cheerios while watching tourists.

hutongs are poor neighborhoods and the govt has been tearing them down to put up buildings.

here's the temple of good harvest in the temple of heaven park. i had meant to go here saturday but i got distracted by the pearl market.
people dancing next to the wall. there was also a big courtyard along the wall where people were playing hacky sack with feathers on them.

saturday afternoon i went to ritan park and ate some dinner while watching cute chinese kids playing. people were fishing in this pond which was pretty gross.
the pearl market, not to be confused with the silk market. this market had more electronics and watches. i got lots of stuff here :)

i got sushi on friday night. it was the last time i felt good and to think i told myself i wouldn't eat raw fish here.
